FLAPS (SWIRL) are flaps (valves) that are located in the intake manifold near the intake channels of the cylinder head. They have several roles in the operation of the engine, but the most important roles are the quiet operation of the engine at idle, smaller turbo holes (turbo lag) and lower emissions. They are controlled by the ECU (engine control unit) or engine computer in the vehicle which when the engine is idling keeps the dampers closed and thus increases the turbulence in the intake manifold and vacuum and thus allows better atomization and combustion of the mixture thus reducing emissions. Also, with the optimal position of the mudguards, the engine gets the set torque when accelerating from low revs and the turbo hole is less pronounced. When the engine reaches its maximum torque the dampers are usually open and then the engine can develop all the declared power. Flaps problems are quite common due to poor fuel quality (insufficient purification) and continuous refueling, soot build-up and mechanical blocking are common but it often happens that the flaps themselves fall into the engine cylinder resulting in severe mechanical damage to the engine and cost repair.
The most common symptoms of FLAPS problems are:
There are several ways to solve the FLAPS problem:
With the correct and quality FLAPS off, the engine will work completely correctly without any lamps, errors and limp modes. Also, the DPF will continue to perform regeneration at the prescribed intervals. During the technical inspection, it will not be possible to notice the FLAPS off and the vehicle will pass all ECO tests. Mechanical removal of flaps with FLAPS off prevents the scenario in which flaps can fall into the engine and destroy it. In practice, the turbo hole created by removing FLAPS is negligible and imperceptible if the whole procedure is done with quality.
